In conjunction with local area service providers, law enforcement, and others, the DVCC is working to bring a Family Justice Center to the Omaha area.
What is a Family Justice Center?
- A Family Justice Center is a new community initiative designed to help domestic violence victims and their children by bringing domestic violence professionals under one roof. For the first time in our history, victims can have easy access to advocates, police officers, prosecutors, probation officers, counselors, doctors and others in one location.
The goals are simple: provide more services from one location; reduce childe abuse and domestic violence incidents; hold batterers accountable and ultimately see domestic violence homicides eliminated.
Why does Omaha need a Family Justice Center?
- The current system is difficult for victims and unintentionally wears them down. Victims are often required to travel from location to location to seek services that are scattered throughout our community. They have to tell their story over and over again to law enforcement, courts, legal aid, medical professionals, transportation officials, housing, social services, mental health, rehabilitation, and many more. Needless to say, the system unintentionally makes it easier for victims to remain frustrated and ultimately give up.
How will victims and children benefit from this initiative?
- A collaborative effort will provide more support to victims and children involved in domestic violence through improved case management and a more efficient exchange of information and resources. Bridging communication gaps will provide victims accessibility to services and resources and make the entire process of reporting a domestic violence incident much less overwhelming for the victims and children involved.
What organizations will participate in the Family Justice Center?
- The list of FJC Service Providers is still being compiled. However, our goal is to offer comprehensive medical and legal services, counseling to victims, links to Juvenile, Civil and Criminal court, as well as access to on-site professionals such as child services, probation, lawyers and advocates, all under one roof.
