TAKE ACTION TO IMPROVE THE HEALTHCARE RESPONSE
Domestic violence is a major public healthcare issue. Most women visit health care providers for routine medical care, and victims of domestic violence also see health care providers for treatment of their injuries. The U.S. Department of Justice reports that 37 percent of all women who sought care in hospital emergency rooms for violence-related injuries were injured by a current or former spouse, boyfriend or girlfriend. You play a critical role in the identification, assessment, treatment, referral and recovery of your patient who may be a victim of domestic violence. You have an opportunity to send a clear message in a non-judgmental manner. Whether your patient plans to stay in an abusive relationship, is preparing to leave or has left, helping your patient develop a safety plan can save lives.
It is critical to understand the safety issues your patient faces in a violent relationship. Here are some interviewing techniques to assist you.
