The Silence Stops Here, Meals to End Domestic Violence Campaign”

Within the last several months, the Omaha Metropolitan area has witnessed an alarming increase in the number of domestic violence homicides. The Domestic Violence Coordinating Council (DVCC) a non profit 501c(3) is committed to building public awareness through a unique campaign entitled, “The Silence Stops Here.”  A Press Conference was held Wednesday, June 14, 2006 at 9:00 A.M at Lewis and Clark Landing on the riverfront with Nebraska Attorney General Jon Bruning kicking off the campaign.    This press conference was designed to encourage citizens of the Omaha Metro area and across the state to seek assistance if they or someone they know is a victim of domestic violence.  “The Silence Stops Here” campaign offers an opportunity for the community to respond.  One word of encouragement can mean the difference between life and death for a person in an abusive relationship.

On July 25, 2006 during lunch and dinner periods, the DVCC partnered with local area restaurants in, “Meals to End Domestic Violence.” We hope you participated by joining us in the fight to Stop the Silence of Domestic Violence.

On July 25th, during the “Stop the Silence, Meals to end Domestic Violence Campaign,” Domestic Violence Council Members  distributed small informational packets to patrons. The packets included valuable and usable materials regarding the signs of domestic violence, what to do to help someone you may know or suspect is in a violent relationship, where to turn for help and how to access community resources.

Participating restaurants donated a percentage of each food and drink bill during the lunch and/or dinner period on July 25, 2006 to support the Domestic Violence Coordinating Council’s fight against domestic violence.

What is domestic violence?

Domestic violence is an escalating pattern of abuse where one partner in an intimate relationship controls the other through force, intimidation, or the threat of violence.  Abuse comes in many forms, not just physical.

What to say if you believe someone you know is in a volatile relationship:

     ·        No one deserves to be abused.

·        I am concerned about your health and safety.

·        I am concerned that it will only get worse.

·        This is a very common problem.

·        I am here for you when you are ready.

·        You are not alone.
