An Innovative Medical Education Program
A first of its kind Nationally, is underway in Omaha, Nebraska.

A Bio-psychosocial perspective on domestic violence through an elective curriculum offering for the fourth year medical student.

This four week medical curriculum is entitled, “Family Medicine Elective in Domestic Violence”.  It is sponsored by Paul Paulman, MD and Dr. Layne Prest from the Department of Family Medicine at NHS-University of Nebraska Medical Center.

The medial student will explore the important aspects of the medical-legal encounter with this  “hands-on”, interactive experience.  Within this interface with local community agency experts the student will learn the importance of accurate record keeping, documentation and evidence collection.

The student will experience the opportunity to present as an expert witness in a mock court trial.  During the four week elective, the student will draw from the community experience gained in order to prepare for this medical-legal encounter.

The collaborative support and leadership includes the domestic violence service agencies, the local domestic violence shelters, the domestic violence police unit and victim assistance unit and the judicial system.  This elective is a valuable experience for the student to network with and learn from the community experts.
